The Honey of Cadiz

From the earliest times…

Honey is a natural product, known and consumed by humans for its healing and nutritional properties for nearly two hundred thousand years. It is no wonder, then, that it exists in the Cadiz area from the earliest times, as honey was an integral part of the food in all cultures that have populated the area. In Roman times, for example, food was often caramelized in oil and honey, and wine was flavored with water, honey and spices. But before them, the Phoenicians and Tartesians were already producing and exporting their much appreciated honey. Later, the Arab culture bestowed us with the use of honey in its exquisite pastries and confectionery, which in turn was inherited in these lands by Christian culture, and carried through to present times.

The perfect setting

The honey produced in the province of Cadiz is superb in quality, much of it certified organic. This could not be otherwise, since this land has ecosystems that are quite gifted for the practice of beekeeping, offering a suitable habitat for the abundant production of medicinal and aromatic plants from which honey is made. These environments can be found in the Sierra, or mountain areas (the Natural Parks of Sierra de Grazalema or Los Alcornocales) as well as the countryside (Jerez, banks of the Guadalete), or even the coast (Conil, Chicalana, Sanlúcar...).

The sector is generally composed of small farms, where it is often the beekeepers themselves who directly sell their products, usually in small shops within the local food market, or at various craft fairs in the region. In recent times, a gourmet-quality offer of different types of honey has been created, sold in containers that are specifically designed for the high-end segment of the market.
